Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is likely to sign Scottsboro Boys Pardon this week in Scottsboro sources report.

Update Apr 13, 2013: Scottsboro's Daily Sentinel reports Gov. Bentley will be in Scottsboro Thursday, Apr. 18 to ceremoniously sign the bill. The local paper also reports Jesse Jackson may also be in town for the signing.

Federal Law forced Alabama to end racist practices in State Government and its laws. Unfortunately racist action words remain in Alabama's Constitution. We have ignorant political representatives such as Hubbard who denounce Equal Opportunity Laws.

Other Republican racists link removal of racist words and past law in Alabama's Constitution with removal of other rights of the people, such as public education rights placed on the line in the recent Alabama Amendment 4. We also have local politicians who have removed citizens right to vote for their county commission. Rights to vote removed under the excuse of costs. All the while elected officials in Jackson County Alabama vote themselves large pay increases.

A local act was submitted by the local legislative delegation, Republican majority, per request of the out going commission, questionable Democrats, and approved by a minority number of total voters casting ballots. 7,136 did not vote on this local Constitutional Amendment. 8,889 voted to remove voting rights compared with 4,996 voted to preserve their right to vote on county commissioners when they can not serve their term of office. The law allows the governor to appoint a county commissioner for whatever reason the elected official cannot serve their term in office. Previous law allowed voters to choose by vote empty county commissioner positions over one year in length; under a year remaining in office the Governor would appoint.

This act was passed out of ignorance and hatred by Republicans for former Senator Lowell Barron, the state senator who was responsible for the old law which established the citizens right to choose by vote an empty county commissioner's position.

Department of Energy Discriminates Against Georgia Minority and Poor Communities

During Black History month 2012 it seems a bit disingenuous that our federal government still discriminates against minority and poor people.

We have came many miles in the march toward racial and social class equality involving the laws of our nation. Unfortunately, when a comparatively small amount of money is involved with the nuclear industry involving site monitoring to protect citizens, injustice in the form of discrimination moves forward in government.

This is a reminder that racism and class discrimination are often based on financial reasons.

"ATLANTA-The Department of Energy (DOE) announced Tuesday that it does not plan to restore environmental monitoring to Georgia communities surrounding the Savannah River Site (SRS), a US nuclear weapons complex notorious for its Cold War legacy radioactive waste."

"This monitoring, which was cut in Georgia 2003, tests drinking water, rain, crops, fish, air and more near SRS in order to protect residents in poor and rural areas, including Georgia’s Burke and Screven Counties, where many people rely on water from private wells, home-grown crops and fish from the Savannah River."

"“The DOE’s obstruction to environmental monitoring in Georgia is a gross example of environmental injustice,” Bobbie Paul, Georgia WAND Executive Director said. “Radiation does not acknowledge state boundaries. Minorities also were steered to more expensive subprime loans even though they were qualified for traditional mortgage rates. Justice Department officials said it was the largest residential discrimination settlement in U.S. history.

“The victims had no idea they were being victimized. Ms. Rosa Parks was sent to Abbeville, Al. by the local NAACP to investigate the rape of Ms. Taylor.

 News articles about the 1944 rape by seven whites who were never prosecuted for the rape of Ms. Recy Taylor.

The story of Ms. Recy Taylor is a story of Jim Crow America, a story of no justice and of tyranny. The story of Ms. Taylor must be told so that we are reminded of a period in our history where racial injustice was the rule and practice. The tyranny of racial oppression can never be allowed to exist and those who perpetrate racial discrimination must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

In Ms Taylor's case 2 all white male grand juries refused to indite the rapist. Then, as an additional indignity she was harassed by the police who should have been helping her.

Ms. Taylor's husband was offered $100 from each of the rapists as a proposed settlement. This offer was apparently approved by the local legal system.

There were seven men who openly admitted to the community and the Grand Jury that they had raped Ms. Taylor. The Grand Jury refused to return an indictment. This statement by one of the rapists was reported in local media accounts, "N***er- ain't $600 enough for raping your wife?"

"In her book "At the Dark End of the Street" Danielle McGuire writes about the rape in 1944 of a twenty-four-year-old mother and sharecropper, Recy Taylor, who strolled toward home after an evening of singing and praying at the Rock Hill Holiness Church in Abbeville, Alabama. Seven white men, armed with knives and shotguns, ordered the young woman into their green Chevrolet, raped her, and left her for dead. The president of the local NAACP branch office sent his best investigator and organizer to Abbeville. Her name was Rosa Parks. In taking on this case, Parks launched a movement that ultimately changed the world."

Update: August 25, 2010--At a meeting at St. Paul AME Church last night, Rev. Anderson stated he had met with the Mayor and other city officials to include FEMA representatives. Officials have suggested that residents which were flooded should move. It was stated property owners homes will be purchased and new homes will be made available at no charge to the current property owners. Currently flood victims are staying in area motels. Food assistance is being provided. Rev Anderson stated the motel stays will be extended, FEMA trailers will be made available as well as public housing. It was stated efforts are being made to acquire furniture to replace lost furniture. Fund raisers are scheduled at St.Paul Church, North Houston St., Friday and Saturday at 6PM. Priorities...Recreation or infrastructure? Failed drainage, urban blight, neglect. But new soccer fields, tennis courts and a splash park are far more important than adequate infrastructure to prevent flooding. The continued neglect of the minority community can not be tolerated. Here's the problem folks, a larger well planned drainage system usually does not have a nice big bronze "vanity plaque" on it that lists those who built the ditch. Maybe a large "vanity plaque" should be erected with a drainage project, maybe then an adequate drainage system could be built.

A larger well planned drainage system will cost many millions but it must be accomplished or we will experiance flooding problems on a much more frequent basis due to development changing the course of smaller waterways and over stressing historical area drainage. Changing climate patterns will also result in more extremes in weather. Scottsboro's drainage system must be improved sooner rather than later and must receive a high priority.
