Music Heals the Soul - The Klan, Music and Change - The Story of Daryl Davis and the KKK

Racism and people's hatred may be healed.

This is a true story about a world traveled musician changing the lives of Klansman.

Photo from Daryl Davis, story by Rebecca Savastio published on line at http://guardianlv.com/2013/11/kkk-member-walks-up-to-black-musician-in-bar-but-its-not-a-joke-and-what-happens-next-will-astound-you/#ELL6pI9i9HGSH8k8.99  Fair Use for non-profit Race Relations education and news reporting.

"Daryl Davis is no ordinary musician. He’s played with President Clinton and tours the country playing “burnin’ boogie woogie piano” and sharing musical stylings inspired by greats like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. He’s a highly respected and electrifying performer who is currently an integral member of The Legendary Blues Band (formerly known as the Muddy Waters Band,) and he rocks the stage all over the nation...It was 1983 and Davis was playing country western music in an (informally) all-white lounge. He was the only black musician in the place and when his set was over, a man approached him."

At the stories end, Davis tells Ms. Sevastio - “When two enemies are talking they’re not fighting.”

The rest is history, please read more about this marvelous story about people and how music truly soothes the soul. Story link at: http://guardianlv.com/2013/11/kkk-member-walks-up-to-black-musician-in-bar-but-its-not-a-joke-and-what-happens-next-will-astound-you/#ELL6pI9i9HGSH8k8.99

Immigration madness - how racist political leadership costs all citizens regardless of race.

"Immigration law case payouts now total $580,000. That is not counting the states legal expenses...The law barred and criminalized contracts with illegal immigrants, required new students to provide immigration information for public school enrollment, barred illegal immigrants from transactions with governments, required the carrying of proof of lawful immigration status, barred illegal immigrants from seeking jobs and allowed law enforcement officers to check immigration status of people during routine traffic stops and other law enforcement contact. It allowed law enforcement to hold suspected illegal immigrants without bond." http://blog.al.com/wire/2014/05/alabama_agrees_to_230000_to_se.html

Overcoming Racial Discrimination - Correcting the Record, Medal of Honors to be Awarded

Stars and Stripes, Feb 21, 2014: "...In 2002, Congress, through the Defense Authorization Act, called for a review of Jewish-American and Hispanic-American veteran war records from these wars, to ensure those deserving the Medal of Honor were not denied because of prejudice."

"During the review, records of several white soldiers were also found to display criteria worthy of the Medal of Honor. The 2002 Act was amended to allow these soldiers to be honored with the upgrade — in addition to the Jewish and Hispanic American Soldiers."  http://www.stripes.com/news/special-reports/medal-of-honor/obama-to-award-24-medals-of-honor-1.269228

"Clean Up Abandoned Uranium Mines – Urgent Message From First Nations"

The poisoning of America: "Throughout the West, particularly on tribal land, abandoned open pit uranium mines continue to emit radiation and toxic heavy metal dust into the air, land and water. These pit mines were created during the cold war frenzy when the Atomic Energy Commission stated that it would buy all of the uranium that could be mined. Corporations such as Kerr-McGee and Atlantic Richfield as well as local ranchers jumped on the chance to make money. When they were done, the pits were left behind with no remediation. The radiation and toxic heavy metals from the mine contaminate the food supply as livestock drink polluted water and plants grown in contaminated soil. People who live near the mines experience many health effects including high rates of cancer deaths and birth defects. You can read more about this in our article, “America’s Secret Fukushima Poisoning the Breadbasket of the World.”. – Margaret Flowers"

TVA COAL ASH and RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

Arrowhead Landfill near Uniontown,  Al. (photo - southernstudies.org)

TVA COAL ASH and RACIAL DISCRIMINATION: ADEM (Alabama Department of Environmental Management) could loose all Federal funding, totaling near $54 million, due to discriminatory acts against minority peoples in the State of Alabama claims environmental groups and their attorneys.

The claim originated as a result of ADEM's refusal to meet with concerned citizens and environmental groups due to the dumping of TVA coal ash which has contaminated local water supplies in Uniontown, Alabama. Other states have refused to accept TVA's coal ash due to high contamination levels of dangerous substances such as Arsenic, Mercury, and other heavy metals.

"Montgomery, Ala. August 16, 2013. Citizens from Uniontown Alabama were denied permission by the Alabama Environmental Management Commission (EMC) to address environmental injustice and threats to their health and welfare resulting from operations of the Arrowhead Landfill located just outside of Uniontown. T...he EMC oversees the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), the state agency responsible for enforcing the permit for the landfill. The EMC also refused to hear from an environmental attorney regarding ADEM’s failure to properly consider civil rights issues in its permitting process that could put all federal funds it receives in jeopardy."

"The Black Belt Citizens Fighting for Health and Justice, a nonprofit organization from Uniontown, was to present on August 16 the results from testing water samples taken by Samford University faculty from Arrowhead Landfill run-off and from a private well located on property adjacent to the landfill. The tests revealed elevated levels of arsenic and conductivity. Arsenic leaching from coal ash and coal ash dust is a known risk agent for cancer. The landfill has been a site of controversy since toxic coal ash residue from the holding pond failure at TVA’s power plant in Kingston Tennessee was transported to Uniontown in 2009 and 2010 for disposal." Citizens Denied Audience Before State Environmental Commission

Montgomery, Ala. August 16, 2013. Citizens from Uniontown Alabama were denied permission by the Alabama Environmental Management Commission (EMC) to address environmental injustice and threats to their health and welfare resulting from operations of the Arrowhead Landfill located just outside of Uniontown. The EMC oversees the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), the state agency responsible for enforcing the permit for the landfill. The EMC also refused to hear from an environmental attorney regarding ADEM’s failure to properly consider civil rights issues in its permitting process that could put all federal funds it receives in jeopardy.

The Black Belt Citizens Fighting for Health and Justice, a nonprofit organization from Uniontown, was to present on August 16 the results from testing water samples taken by Samford University faculty from Arrowhead Landfill run-off and from a private well located on property adjacent to the landfill. The tests revealed elevated levels of arsenic and conductivity. Arsenic leaching from coal ash and coal ash dust is a known risk agent for cancer. The landfill has been a site of controversy since toxic coal ash residue from the holding pond failure at TVA’s power plant in Kingston Tennessee was transported to Uniontown in 2009 and 2010 for disposal.

A dozen citizens made the trip to support the planned request that the EMC instruct ADEM to take enforcement action against the Arrowhead Landfill to prevent more toxic contaminants from migrating from the residue. They want ADEM to exercise supervision and oversight of the landfill’s plan for remediation of the toxic discharge.

While the EMC did not technically disapprove the Black Belt Citizens group’s request to speak, the board voted to postpone the subject until after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concludes its investigation into charges that ADEM violated EPA requirements to protect the civil rights of citizens. It could be months or years before the civil rights claims are resolved by EPA. The EMC’s decision effectively denied the Uniontown group the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding immediate health threats.

The Black Belt Citizens also wanted to ask that ADEM support finding an alternative site for a spray field for the Uniontown Wastewater Treatment Plant which is currently proposed for a site off Perry County Rd 53. This site is considered unsuitable because of its high water table and proximity to residences and streams. Also, the soil types on the property have severe limitations for land application of wastewater because they will not percolate properly.

The EMC also disapproved the request of environmental attorney David A. Ludder who proposed to make a presentation on EPA’s civil rights requirements and ADEM’s failure to implement those requirements. Ludder’s planned presentation can be found at http://www.enviro-lawyer.com/TitleVICompliance.pdf.

“EMC Chairman H. Lanier Brown, II, a Birmingham attorney, claimed that the planned presentation concerned a matter that is the subject of a complaint being reviewed by EPA,” said Ludder. “Anyone can look at the presentation and see that it was not about any specific site or complaint.”

The Perry County group expected to be heard because the EMC Chairman Brown had previously indicated his approval and in the past the full EMC has followed the recommendation of the chair.  In neither instance did the EMC have a valid reason under its own rules for disapproving the presentations.

“This is a major step backward in one of the few areas where the ADEM Reform Coalition (ARC) has seen progress by ADEM.” stated Casi Callaway, Mobile Baykeeper and co-chair of the ARC, a statewide environmental group that has filed a petition with the EPA to remove ADEM’s permitting authority. “ARC has worked for twelve years to establish better communication between ADEM and citizens. For the EMC to disapprove the request after citizens traveled at their own expense to make the presentation, only to be denied their voice before a public entity, is not only shocking but unacceptable.”

The ARC’s initial response to the action of the EMC was to boycott a meeting with ADEM’s Director and staff scheduled to follow the EMC meeting.

Scottsboro Boys Pardon Likely to be Signed This Week (In Scottsboro?) An Example of "White Guilt" or Republican Grandstanding?

Dr. Shelby Steele describes "white guilt": "Steele believes that the use of victimization is the greatest hindrance for black Americans. In his view, white Americans see blacks as victims to ease their guilty conscience, while blacks attempt to turn their status as victims into a kind of currency that will purchase nothing of real or lasting value. Therefore, he claims, blacks must stop "buying into this zero-sum game" by adopting a "culture of excellence and achievement" without relying on "set-asides and entitlements." The question remains, what will the pardon act accomplish; does it create a race relations education program in the state; does it provide adequate criminal indigent defense funding? The answer is no.

Republican Party Racism in Alabama - House Speaker Mike Hubbard denounced U.S. Voting Rights Act

Republican Party racism in Alabama - House Speaker Mike Hubbard denounced U.S. Voting Rights Act.

ACLU and NAACP requested UN Observers to monitor U.S. Election polls due to Republican Party racial discrimination.

"Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard is, in protest of the monitors’ presence preparing legislation to have all poll watchers in Alabama hold U.S. citizenship. “It’s bad enough that Alabama remains trapped under the provisions of the Voting Rights Act,” Hubbard said “So we certainly don’t need anyone from the United Nations coming into our state and meddling in our elections, as well.” http://thinkprogress.org/security/2012/10/23/1063651/conservatives-panic-election-monitors/?mobile=nc

Unfortunately with people such as Mike Hubbard and the other racists in the Republican Party we do need poll watchers.

Federal Law forced Alabama to end racist practices in State Government and its laws. Unfortunately racist action words remain in Alabama's Constitution. We have ignorant political representatives such as Hubbard who denounce Equal Opportunity Laws.

Other Republican racists link removal of racist words and past law in Alabama's Constitution with removal of other rights of the people, such as public education rights placed on the line in the recent Alabama Amendment 4. Republican State Senator Arthur Orr is responsible for that racist attempt at removing the public education rights of children. http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/article/20121028/NEWS02/310280012/Amendment-4-Alabama-voters-get-final-say-segregation-wording-constitution The actions of racists in Alabama point toward the formation of fascist policy making within the Alabama Republican Party. The right wing Alabama Republican extremists have demonstrated their penchant for racism and fascism.

We also have local politicians who have removed citizens right to vote for their county commission. Rights to vote removed under the excuse of costs. All the while elected officials in Jackson County Alabama vote themselves large pay increases.

A local act was submitted by the local legislative delegation, Republican majority, per request of the out going commission, questionable Democrats, and approved by a minority number of total voters casting ballots. 7,136 did not vote on this local Constitutional Amendment. 8,889 voted to remove voting rights compared with 4,996 voted to preserve their right to vote on county commissioners when they can not serve their term of office. The law allows the governor to appoint a county commissioner for whatever reason the elected official cannot serve their term in office. Previous law allowed voters to choose by vote empty county commissioner positions over one year in length; under a year remaining in office the Governor would appoint.

This act was passed out of ignorance and hatred by Republicans for former Senator Lowell Barron, the state senator who was responsible for the old law which established the citizens right to choose by vote an empty county commissioner's position.

STAND UP FOR ALABAMA say Alabama Republicans today, parroting the racist mantra of George Wallace. Unfortunately yesterday and today the phrase does not mean stand for equal opportunity for the people of Alabama. GOP claims of massive voter fraud concerning the Democrats unfounded: http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/policy_brief_on_the_truth_about_voter_fraud/

The Republican Party has waged a campaign of deceit and racist tactics nationwide. Now their tactics include criminal activity.

There are various news stories around the nation about the Republican Party's concern over voter fraud. A closer look reveals it is the Republican Party who is stealing the vote and committing the most un-American of activities: voter disenfranchisement, misrepresentation and voter fraud, as depicted in the reports below.

Department of Energy Discriminates Against Georgia Minority and Poor Communities

.
During Black History month 2012 it seems a bit disingenuous that our federal government still discriminates against minority and poor people.

We have came many miles in the march toward racial and social class equality involving the laws of our nation. Unfortunately, when a comparatively small amount of money is involved with the nuclear industry involving site monitoring to protect citizens, injustice in the form of discrimination moves forward in government.

This is a reminder that racism and class discrimination are often based on financial reasons.

"ATLANTA-The Department of Energy (DOE) announced Tuesday that it does not plan to restore environmental monitoring to Georgia communities surrounding the Savannah River Site (SRS), a US nuclear weapons complex notorious for its Cold War legacy radioactive waste."

"This monitoring, which was cut in Georgia 2003, tests drinking water, rain, crops, fish, air and more near SRS in order to protect residents in poor and rural areas, including Georgia’s Burke and Screven Counties, where many people rely on water from private wells, home-grown crops and fish from the Savannah River."

"“The DOE’s obstruction to environmental monitoring in Georgia is a gross example of environmental injustice,” Bobbie Paul, Georgia WAND Executive Director said. “Radiation does not acknowledge state boundaries. The people living downwind and downstream of SRS deserve to know what’s in the water, air and food that they consume.”"
For more information on this story: http://gawand.org/2012/02/01/department-of-energy-refuses-to-restore-environmental-monitoring-to-georgia-communities-near-nuclear-site/

As one concerned citizen has stated: "Can't have any proof that the actions of [corporations] enabled by our government are killing folks, now can we?"

It seems a complaint is in order with Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. Human life and health must take precedence over department budgets.

Home Mortgage Discrimination Case - Racism in America

"Bank of America Corp's Countrywide Financial unit agreed on Wednesday to pay a record $335 million to settle civil charges that it discriminated against minority homebuyers." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45755576/ns/business-us_business/t/bofa-million-settlement-us-over-bias-case/from/toolbar
New York, NY July 2, 2008-- On the NAACP’s National Day of Action, State Senator [Kevin] Parker  joined the NAACP Brooklyn Branch and other elected officials on the city hall steps to fight against discriminatory mortgage lending. http://www.nysenate.gov/news/senator-parker-fights-against-mortgage-discrimination

Reuters via The "Globe & Mail"- The settlement covers conduct between 2004 and 2008 before the acquisition by Bank of America, and involves a range of alleged wrongdoing including charging African-Americans and Hispanics higher interest rates and fees than non-minorities.

Minorities also were steered to more expensive subprime loans even though they were qualified for traditional mortgage rates. Justice Department officials said it was the largest residential discrimination settlement in U.S. history.

“The victims had no idea they were being victimized. They were thrilled to have gotten a loan and realize the American dream,” Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, told reporters. “This is discrimination with a smile.” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/b-of-a-to-pay-record-settlement-in-mortgage-discrimination-case/article2279306/
