DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY OIG REPORT 18-84

Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General Report – Findings indicate law enforcement and administrative officials deceived the OIG in their statements to investigators. However, there was no corrective actions taken in any of the deficiencies or misconduct identified.

“On June 23, 2018, DHS announced that DHS and HHS had “a central database” containing location information for separated parents and minors that both departments could access and update. However, OIG found no evidence that such a database exists. The OIG team asked several ICE employees, including those involved with DHS’ reunification efforts at ICE Headquarters, if they knew of such a database, and they did not.” Page 10 OIG Report 18-84

Forgotten History and An Impressive Face Book site - "Mighty Girl" with Today's Women Making History

Forgotten History
16-year-old Sybil Ludington became a hero of the American Revolutionary War. At approximately 9 pm on April 26, 1777, Sybil, the eldest daughter of Colonel Henry Ludington, climbed onto her horse and proceeded to ride 40 miles in order to muster local militia troops in response to a British attack on the town of Danbury, Connecticut -- covering twice the distance that... Paul Revere rode during his famous midnight ride.

Riding all night through rain, Sybil returned home at dawn having given nearly the whole regiment of 400 Colonial troops the order to assemble. While the regiment could not save Danbury from being burned, they joined forces with the Continental Army following the subsequent Battle of Ridgefield and were able to stop the British advance and force their return to their boats.

Following the battle, General George Washington personally thanked Sybil for her service and bravery. Although every American school child knows the story of Paul Revere, unfortunately few are taught about Sybil Ludington's courageous feat and her contribution to war effort.

Ms. Wake - Photo courtesy of "Mighty Girl" Face Book site - which impressed me. Fair use for non-profit news reporting and commentary.  https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/

British secret agent Nancy Wake was the Allies' most decorated servicewoman of WWII and the Gestapo's most-wanted person. By 1943, the Gestapo had placed a 5 million franc bounty on her head and nicknamed her the "White Mouse" for her ability to elude capture.

Born in New Zealand in 1912, Wake grew up in Australia but ran away from home at the age of 16 to become a nurse and later a journalist. She used an inheritance from an aunt to travel to New York, London, and then to Paris where she worked for a variety of news outlets during the 1930s. She and her husband, Henri Fiocca, were living in Marseille when Germany invaded France, trapping them in the country. Undaunted, Wake became a courier for the Resistance and helped stranded British military personnel escape capture and return to the UK.

When the local resistance network was betrayed in 1943, Wake fled Marseille; her husband remained behind to settle the family business and was captured and executed by the Gestapo after he refused to disclose her location. Wake was herself arrested in Toulouse, but was released four days later when the Gestapo didn’t realize her true identity. From Toulouse, Wake tried five times to escape into neutral Spain, but each of these attempts were thwarted by German patrols. At one point to escape, Wake was forced to hurl herself from a train window while dodging gunfire. Finally, on her sixth attempt Wake was able to cross into Spain while buried in the back of a coal truck.

From Spain, Wake made her way to Britain and was soon recruited by the Special Operations Executive, the British organization focused on conducting espionage and aiding resistance movements in Nazi-occupied territory. Wake distinguished herself in training and parachuted into France in April 1944, less than a year after her daring escape. Wake’s instructions were to help the Resistance to prepare to assist the Allied invasion and she dedicated herself to building up various resistance groups into a cohesive fighting force. With her help, this group of 7,500 French Resistance guerrilla fighters assaulted factories and communications, successfully engaging over 22,000 SS soldiers.

After the war, Wake was honored by Australia, France, Great Britain, and the US for her service. She continued to work as an intelligence officer and also tried her hand at politics. She published her autobiography, “The White Mouse”, and her story was also featured in several TV shows and movies, including a 1987 made for TV movie called “Nancy Wake.” She scoffed at her portrayal in that film, which showed her cooking breakfast and getting romantically involved with another resistance member: “For goodness sake, did the allies parachute me into France to fry eggs and bacon for the men?” she said. “There wasn’t an egg to be had for love nor money, and even if there had been, why would I be frying it when I had men to do that sort of thing?” Wake passed away in London in 2011 at the age of 98

Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green "I'm really hoping this can change the way we treat cancer in America,"
Dr. Green - Photo courtesy of "Mighty Girl" Face Book site - which impressed me. Fair use for non-profit news reporting and commentary.  https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/

Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, one of fewer than 100 black female physicists in the US, was recently awarded a $1.1 million grant to further develop her revolutionary technology that uses laser-activated nanoparticles to treat cancer. "I'm really hoping this can change the way we treat cancer in America," the assistant professor at Morehouse School of Medicine told AL.com. "There are so many people who only get a three-month or six-month survival benefit from the drugs they take. Then three or six months later, they're sent home with no hope, nothing else we can do. Those are the patients I want to try to save, the ones where regular medicine isn't effective for them."

The loss of close family members to the disease fuels Green's drive to find more effective treatments. After the death of her parents, she was raised by an aunt and uncle, both of whom died from cancer. She took time off from school to help her uncle through chemotherapy and says that she "saw first-hand how devastating it was." She adds that her aunt "refused the treatment because she didn't want to experience the side effects. It was heartbreaking, but I could appreciate she wanted to die on her own terms." This experience motivated her to find alternative cancer treatments that don't have the devastating side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

In addition to pursuing her research, which has received a huge boost by the grant from the Veterans Administration HBCU-Research Scientist Training Program Career Development Award, Green also works to inspire the next generation to follow in her footsteps. Physics is still an overwhelmingly male profession so Green rarely turns down invitations to speaks at schools and nonprofit organizations. "Usually if there is an invitation to speak at a forum like that, I accept it because I feel like it's a responsibility," she says. "There are so few of us (black women in STEM fields) I don't feel like I have the luxury to say I'm too busy."

"There are black female scientists who don't get media exposure," she continues. "Because of that, young black girls don't see those role models as often as they see Beyonce or Nicki Minaj. It's important to know that our brains are capable of more than fashion and entertainment and music, even though arts are important... It takes a village to raise a child. I repeat that because a village of people helped raise me and instill values in me, and encouraged me to get to this point. I did not get here by myself. Because of that clarity, I know my responsibility to encourage and mentor the next generation."

The Republican's Southern Strategy = Racism

Examples of Republican Party Racism.

What is the Southern Strategy? Wiki has an excellent introduction to the Southern Strategy. "In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to a Republican Party (GOP) method of winning Southern states in the years after the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by exploiting opposition to the cultural upheaval of the 1960s/70s and in reaction to the changing economics of the South." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

Other excellent articles on the "Southern Strategy:" " Conservative and preponderantly white national party," http://uncpressblog.com/2010/04/30/southern-strategy/ "Some Republicans seem to want to re-fight the Civil War -- and the civil rights movement." https://www.salon.com/2010/04/11/gop_southern_strategy_lives_on/
Institute of Southern Studies on the history of the new Southern Strategy: https://www.facingsouth.org/2006/10/the-southern-strategy-at-election-time.html

In Alabama we see the Southern Strategy in the Governors race. Robert Bentley in his political platform has highlighted "State Rights." Bentley says, "I believe the Tenth Amendment establishes limits on the federal government, which have not been enforced." Dr. Bentley has not replied to questions I have submitted to him regarding his statement and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bentley's political platform concerning State Rights: http://www.robertbentley2010.com/index.php?page=protecting-our-constitutional-rights  (The link listed was the link of Robert Bentley's political platform. It has been removed and replaced with "RB 2010 - Random Banter" How convenient considering the legal actions being taken against Alabama due to Bentley's racist policies based on state rights.)

Does Dr. Bentley believe the Civil Rights Act should not be enforced since this is a Federal Law? How about the 1965 Voting Rights Act? Both acts were established to counter white supremacy codified by state law. The Federal Government ended Jim Crow, Alabama did not. Alabama still maintains vestiges of Jim Crow in the state Constitution via the Miscegenation (interracial marriage) Clause. Racists within Alabama's governing bodies have prevented the removal of this clause.

UPDATE: Sep. 7, 2011 Gov "State Rights" Bentley's political platform statement has been removed from the web, the effect of racist policy and its application has not been removed. Examples: Comments about non-Christians  http://www.adl.org/PresRele/RelChStSep_90/5963_90.htm Anti-immigration law, "Legalizing Racism..." http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/08/03/legalizing-racism-right-wing-attempts-to-sanction-xenophobia-through-anti-immigration-laws/    an article from this blog on immigration.  http://scottsborostories.blogspot.com/2011/06/why-alabamas-immigration-bill-is-bad.html

Locally we see the Southern Strategy being implemented via surreptitious efforts of the Alabama Republican Party sending its representatives to Jackson County to organize groups of rural whites. This is evident in the formation of the Jackson County Patriots. Republican, Council of Conservative Citizen, CCC, ( http://alcofcc.wordpress.com/who-we-are/ This Word Press Blog was cancelled, they accomplished their mission and did not want to be exposed as racists.), organizers from St. Clair and Jefferson County's were present in the initial organizing phase of the Patriots. The 2 speakers standing before the group, which Senator Barron challenged, are Republican, CCC, organizers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK1Plin6WC0 On local discussion al.com/forums, you witness the same action when the conservative extremists are challenged. They lie, attack and make threats. This is the face of the far right "New Republican Party."

The Republican Party attempts to infuriate hidden racial prejudice in the hearts and minds of white people in our nation. The Republican Party propagandists prey on white guilt and racial prejudice like a hawk hunting a mouse. We witness this bigoted ideology from Republican ultra-conservative propaganda artists such as Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh just to name a few. Republican Tea Party signs http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/16/10-most-offensive-tea-par_n_187554.html

Race baiting Republicans, birthers and massive lies. The Republican Southern Strategy spreads across the nation to drum up hatred of our black President: http://readersupportednews.org/off-site-opinion-section/72-72/2830-the-backlash-against-obamas-blackness

The Republican Party's Southern Strategy is reflective of the Republican Party, some cases the racism is very visible, other cases the racism is covert. Which ever the case the Republican Party is travelling down a regressive, ultra-conservative road not in keeping with our Republic's Constitution. For some reason, the Party of Lincoln has decided they will do better if they appeal to hidden racial prejudices of whites. A political ideology that stands to damage our nation and the Republican Party for many years in the future. The Southern Strategy is an example of the greatest American war of all times, "The Culture War," there are no winners in this war.

Scottsboro Boys Museum Needs Your Help

In our society's communities there comes a time for measurements of a community's values. What are the citizens values and attitudes, what do the people value in a community? Where injustice has occurred how do citizens work to establish their image to the city, county, state, the nation and the world. The time has come for Scottsboro and Alabama's citizens to measure their values relating to race relations.

79 years ago, almost to the day, 9 teenage boys were accused of raping 2 white girls, March 25, 1931. The resulting series of cases become known as the Scottsboro Boys Case. The veil of time has been parted to reveal the truth of the Scottsboro Trials. The cases were a trumped up charge which told the story of racism in Jim Crow America.

The Scottsboro case occurred 7 months after 3 African Americans were kidnapped out of the Marion, Indiana jail where they had been arrested for allegations of raping a white girl. 1 youth escaped 2 were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan by hanging. Fears were rampant that the same would occur in Scottsboro.

History reflects a show of force and cooler heads prevailed in Scottsboro. History also reflects bigotry in Jim Crow Alabama resulted in other than a fair jury trial in Scottsboro and the subsequent cases.

I have traveled around the world in my near 58 years of life. In my travels discussion will eventually come around to "where are you from?" I always proudly answer Scottsboro, Alabama.

Many folks equate Scottsboro with Unclaimed Baggage, within the past 20 years, "snake handling," the Scottsboro case and the stereotype that Scottsboro represents in racism and bigotry. The Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center provides an opportunity to reverse the negative stereotype of Scottsboro, Alabama, to heal the wounds and scars of Jim Crow Alabama and the personal bigotry of a few.

I have recorded the history of the Scottsboro Boys Museum since it opened on December 20, 2009 on this blog. A deal was struck with caring and concerned leadership within the North Alabama United Methodist Conference to occupy the building while the museum staff raise funds for purchasing of the longest standing African American Church in Scottsboro and Jackson County, Alabama. Built in 1878, rebuilt in 1904. The church was literally built by former slaves. The African American Community has purchased this Church many times over in the 132 years it has been in existence. The community, the Methodist Church and all good people have an opportunity to demonstrate exactly where their values lie. Some have stepped up and made big contributions. Senator Lowell Barron, Representatives John Robinson and Butch Taylor are just a few. The Harbin family, the Maples family, Dr Pitts and family of Huntsville, Al. and many others. We have raised $42, 000 dollars but we need $33,000 more for the purchase of the building and property. The United Methodist Conference is asking $75,000 for the property.

No one knows what the future will bring, however I know that an opportunity presents itself to resolve an inequity of history and end a negative stereotype about Scottsboro, Alabama. An opportunity to heal old wounds and educate citizens about the importance of the Scottsboro Boys case and how the case was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. I know there is no better place to do this than a historical African American Church in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Some have said buying or selling Joyce Chapel is just business, I answer those who would say this loudly, NO IT IS NOT JUST BUSINESS!

Joyce Chapel represents the plight of African Americans in Alabama and specifically Scottsboro. Joyce Chapel represents whether a religious institution places money before souls, the community and the cultural heritage of our nation. Joyce Chapel represents the sacrifice of a people and their religious heritage. Joyce Chapel and The Scottsboro Boys Museum represents America, Alabama, Scottsboro, the Methodists and Christian religious values in general. Now all involved must answer, where do their values and hearts lie? Will there be a celebration of progress in a 21st Century Scottsboro or an epitaph of a dead opportunity and a continuation of a negative stereotype about Scottsboro and proof that a culture of racism exists in 21st Century Alabama institutions and people? How will this chapter of Joyce Chapel's history and that of Scottsboro be recorded?

You fellow citizens and readers have a chance to determine how the history of Joyce Chapel and the Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center will be recorded.
